I do feel strongly that a lot of developers would be better served looking at this kind of code and learning the fundamentals rather than immediately diving into frameworks.

In my opinion one is not a developer if they don't understand the fundamentals. Frameworks and library solve different kind of problems but it depends on the project at hand. Saying that frameworks are just bad is an oversimplification, perharps a lack of understanding to some degree
