How did you choose your database (and changes over time)? At what costs?

And limitations?

How did you choices change over time? Like SQLite => MongoDB => PostgreSQL => OrientDB (or other non-Document NoSQL) => Spanner (or other NewSQL)

About costs, I am talking not only about paychecks, but also data integrity / security.

I hope this will be more thoughtful than NoSQL vs SQL debate (and subsequent NoSQL hate / discrimination...).
