Was the introduction of CORS a mistake?

Ive had some not so good experience with CORS, I'm interested to learn about the idea and history behind CORS.

If you protect something with cors, you actually just restrict to view the response in the browser. The server will still process your request and do all the things like creating stuff in the database or fetching data.

CORS is great, problably one of the better security features that browsers added. :)
