Finally, a smooth way to accept payments in “Pay what you want” fashion on Stripe!

Content creators, friends, QR lovers - it’s 2022 and you all are familiar with accepting payments online.

Your audience, whether it’s your friends in real-life or your online community, might want to show their support by donating a little something to support you and your business.

However sometimes the process can be a little awkward:
When it comes to supporting you, it’s best to let people decide what they are willing to donate in exchange for your products or services, instead of enforcing a certain donation criteria:

Whether it’s to show appreciation, support or moral duty, it’s always nice to make people comfortable when sending you money.

Up until today it’s been rather hard to create a “PAY WHAT YOU WANT” link on Stripe.

That is because you’d have to hack a Stripe Payment Page using “Quantity” and then setting a minimum of 1 and a maximum of … just 99!

This was until now the only way to accept a variable amount as a payment, through a Payment Link on Stripe.

We live in a fun world, so there was definitely a use-case for a simpler and more intuitive interface to do that….

Just like that - today everything changes! With the newly added option to let customers pay what they want (for your goods or services rendered), you can create Payment Links that are totally customizable (in terms of the amount a user can pay you).

👀 Here's what it looks like if you want to tip me now

Why does it rock?

This feature rocks because it’s super customizable and super-simple to setup:

  • The look and feel of your payment page (aka branding): add a visual to make your page stand-out, this can be anything that you feel would represent your suggested payment best
  • The recommended suggested payment: giving people an idea of what you think is a fair payment or donation
  • The minimum payment amount and up to a maximum of $10,000 (if you’re based in the US): if you know you don’t want to accept anything under $10 but you want to let your audience be creative with the upper limit ;)
  • The post-check out page: this way you can redirect people after they pay you, to a page of your choice, if you want - or just leave a custom message for them!
  • Tax things: For those who need this, you can collect tax information, collect tax automagically based on your location etc
  • More details about the purchaser: their phone number and/or a physical address for them

Who has this feature been built for?

Many people don’t want to waste their life setting up payment infrastructure, but they like keeping their profits as high as possible.

Usually when you are using a 3rd party payment processing system, you’re going to pay some extra fees.

Platforms like SendOwl, Gumroad, etc. are amazing but they do take a larger chunk of your profits.

Thanks to this Stripe newly launched feature, you can earn more by not giving up some of your profits to a 3rd party solution!

So if you’re a:

  • Party organizers: If you’re taking payments for a ticket to a party
  • Streamers/Content creators: Let your audience send you donations
  • Anyone who loves QR codes: Street performers, lemonade-stand business owners, or even yoga instructors who conduct their business under a tree in a park - this has been built for you!
  • Service providers: You want to book a consultation with a financial advisor? You’re covered!

You should give this new feature a try!

P.S. Remember you can collect tax on these payments extremely easily, so you can sleep safe at night knowing that when tax season is around the corner you’ve covered your bases.

Thanks for reading and now if you’ll excuse me, I have a lot of payment links to update on the hundreds of videos on my YouTube channel…
