#8 React.js Alternatives with Their Use-Case Scenarios

Thought of delving more in React, after these articles:

Why Seek Alternatives to React.js?

1. Managing a Growing React.js Library:

The vast React.js library, with its numerous examples and libraries, can become burdensome in terms of storage space. Developers seeking leaner alternatives are often driven by the need for more efficient resource management.

2. Lack of MVC Structure:

React's absence of a clear Model-View-Controller (MVC) structure prompts developers to explore frameworks that offer a more organized approach to views and data management.

3. Steep Learning Curve:

React's steep learning curve can be a barrier for newcomers, requiring a significant investment of time and effort. Developers often seek alternatives that provide a smoother learning curve without compromising functionality.

4. Difficulty for Newcomers:

The JSX React documentation can pose challenges for newcomers, leading them to consider alternatives with more accessible documentation and a friendlier onboarding experience.

Exploring Top React Alternatives:

1. Angular:

Decision Factors

  • TypeScript-based, providing strong typing and improved error detection.
  • Comprehensive dependency injection support.

Code Example - TypeScript Integration:

// TypeScript in Angular
class AppComponent {
  greeting: string = 'Hello, Angular!';
}
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Code Example - Dependency Injection:

// Dependency Injection in Angular
class DataService {
  getData() {
    return 'Data from Angular service';
  }
}

class AppComponent {
  constructor(private dataService: DataService) {}

  fetchData() {
    const data = this.dataService.getData();
    console.log(data);
  }
}
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Use-Case Scenarios:

  • Enterprise-Level Applications: Angular excels in building complex, feature-rich applications with advanced features, making it an ideal choice for enterprise-level programs.
  • Dependency Injection Requirements: Projects that heavily rely on dependency injection will benefit from Angular's comprehensive support for this feature.

2. Vue.js:

Decision Factors

  • Comparable performance to React with a smaller library size.
  • Simplified development and integration.

Code Example - Vue.js Performance Advantage:

// Vue.js Component
<template>
  <div>
    <p>{{ message }}</p>
  </div>
</template>

<script>
export default {
  data() {
    return {
      message: 'Vue.js performs efficiently!',
    };
  },
};
</script>
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Use-Case Scenarios:

  • Simplicity and Speed: Vue.js is a great fit for projects that prioritize simplicity and quick development without compromising performance.
  • Incremental Adoption: Vue.js is suitable for projects where developers can incrementally adopt the framework into existing codebases.

3. Inferno JS:

Decision Factors

  • Significantly faster than React.
  • Supports various state management frameworks.

Code Example - Inferno.js Speed Advantage:

// Inferno.js Component
import Inferno from 'inferno';

const MyComponent = () => (
  <div>
    <p>Inferno.js is blazing fast!</p>
  </div>
);
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Use-Case Scenarios:

  • Speed-Critical Applications: Inferno.js, being significantly faster than React, is a preferred choice for applications where speed is of utmost importance.
  • Isomorphic Rendering Needs: Projects requiring isomorphic rendering capabilities can leverage Inferno.js for efficient client-server communication.

4. Preact:

Decision Factors

  • Minimal framework with React compatibility.
  • Efficient use of resources.

Code Example - Preact and React Compatibility:

// Preact Component with React Compatibility
import { h, render } from 'preact';

const MyComponent = () => (
  <div>
    <p>Preact offers React compatibility!</p>
  </div>
);

render(<MyComponent />, document.getElementById('root'));
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Use-Case Scenarios:

  • React Compatibility Requirements: Preact is an excellent choice for projects where compatibility with React is crucial, allowing developers to switch between the two seamlessly.
  • Resource Efficiency: Projects with resource constraints can benefit from Preact's minimalistic approach and smaller footprint.

5. Backbone.js:

Decision Factors

  • Supports value-binding and custom events.
  • Lightweight alternative with RESTful JSON interface.

Code Example - Backbone.js Value-Binding:

// Backbone.js Model
const User = Backbone.Model.extend({
  defaults: {
    name: '',
    age: 0,
  },
});

// Backbone.js View
const UserView = Backbone.View.extend({
  render() {
    this.$el.html(`<p>Name: ${this.model.get('name')}, Age: ${this.model.get('age')}</p>`);
    return this;
  },
});

// Usage
const user = new User({ name: 'John', age: 25 });
const userView = new UserView({ model: user });
userView.render();
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Use-Case Scenarios:

  • Value-Binding and Custom Events: Backbone.js is suitable for projects that require value-binding and custom event handling, making it an excellent choice for large-scale JavaScript applications.
  • RESTful JSON Interface: Projects leveraging a RESTful JSON interface can benefit from Backbone.js's lightweight structure.

6. Svelte:

Decision Factors

  • Compiles functionality during the compilation phase, resulting in smaller and faster applications.
  • Ideal for simple web applications with rapid development needs.

Code Example - Svelte Simplicity:

<!-- Svelte Component -->
<script>
  let message = 'Svelte is simple and speedy!';
</script>

<p>{message}</p>
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Use-Case Scenarios:

  • Rapid Development with Few Resources: Svelte is an ideal choice for projects that require rapid development with minimal dependencies, resulting in smaller file sizes and quicker load times.
  • Small-Scale Applications: Projects geared towards smaller-scale applications can benefit from Svelte's simplicity and performance.

7. Ember JS:

Decision Factors

  • Full-fledged framework with built-in features like a router and data layer.
  • Streamlined development with built-in conventions.

Code Example - Ember.js Built-in Handlebars Templates:

{{! Ember.js Template }}
<p>{{user.name}}, Age: {{user.age}}</p>
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Use-Case Scenarios:

  • Built-In Features: Ember.js is well-suited for projects where built-in features like routing, client-side rendering, and a template system are essential.

Decision Factors:

  • Emphasizes functional programming with well-defined asynchronous code.
  • Efficient management of complex codebases.

Code Example - Cycle.js Functional Programming:

// Cycle.js Component
import { run } from '@cycle/run';
import { makeDOMDriver, div, button } from '@cycle/dom';

function main(sources) {
  const click$ = sources.DOM.select('button').events('click');
  const vdom$ = click$.map(() => div('Cycle.js - Functional Programming!'));

Similar to this, I run a developer-centric community on Slack. Where we discuss these kinds of topics, implementations, integrations, some truth bombs, lunatic chats, virtual meets, and everything that will help a developer remain sane ;) Afterall, too much knowledge can be dangerous too.

I'm inviting you to join our free community, take part in discussions, and share your freaking experience & expertise. You can fill out this form, and a Slack invite will ring your email in a few days. We have amazing folks from some of the great companies (Atlassian, Gong, Scaler etc), and you wouldn't wanna miss interacting with them. Invite Form

Yes, I have multiple of my content type sites using it, as well as have a SSR project which was nice to work with. All those can be found on my GitHub.

What I noticed when moving over was how little there is a need for client-side JS on the web these days.

Elm, rescript. Your list is valuable, but may want to add those two to the end of the list - faster compilers, more type safety, elm has high quality libraries also.
