I don't see any reason why you should feel compelled to do it this way. Why not start a smallish personal project instead? Ideally something that stretches your capabilities in a somewhat new direction. I find it's most efficient to choose something that is a bit beyond your current knowledge/experience, but not so much that it becomes overwhelming.
