The Power of Feedback: A Story of Junior and Senior Developers

The office was buzzing with excitement as the junior developer, Alex, nervously joined the group of senior developers for a project meeting. He had only been with the company for a few months and was eager to impress his colleagues.

As Alex entered the room, he could sense that today's meeting was going to be different. The senior developers were all gathered around the table, discussing the project with intense focus. Alex took a seat and waited for the meeting to begin.

"Good morning, Alex," the team leader, Mr. Lee, greeted him with a warm smile. "Today, I have a special exercise planned for all of us. It's a lesson that will benefit both our professional and personal growth."

Alex was curious and eager to learn as Mr. Lee explained the purpose of the exercise. He told them that they were going to learn about the power of feedback and how it can greatly impact their work as developers.

Mr. Lee then presented them with a code for a current project they were working on. Alex quickly noticed a mistake in the code and pointed it out to Mr. Lee, who acknowledged it with a smile. As Mr. Lee went on to present the same code with the same mistake nine more times, each time Alex pointed it out, the room started to fill with laughter and teasing.

Feeling embarrassed, Alex started to lose confidence in himself. But then Mr. Lee revealed the reason behind his actions.

"Every time I showed you the code with the same mistake, none of you praised Alex for noticing it. Instead, you laughed and made fun of him," Mr. Lee said with a serious tone.

The senior developers were surprised and felt guilty for not acknowledging Alex's efforts. Mr. Lee continued, "This behavior is common in our field. We tend to focus on the negatives and criticize each other, rather than recognizing and praising the good in our colleagues."

He then explained that the purpose of the exercise was to teach them to be more mindful of their words and actions, and to focus on the positives in others rather than the negatives.

"Remember, we were all junior developers at some point, and we all made mistakes. It's a natural part of our learning process. Instead of bringing each other down, we should lift each other up and work towards excellence together," Mr. Lee emphasized.

The senior developers took the lesson to heart and promised to change their behavior. From that day on, they started to notice Alex's hard work and praised him for his contributions to the project. The office became a more positive and supportive environment where everyone could grow and learn.

As Alex reflected on that day, he realized that this was a defining moment in his career. He was grateful to have such wise and experienced senior developers who taught him the value of feedback and the importance of not letting criticism hold him back.

And the senior developers? They saw a remarkable improvement in Alex's work and knew that their encouragement and support had played a crucial role in his growth as a developer. Together, they continued to thrive and create amazing projects, always remembering to praise more than they criticized.
