The Future Of Programming in Uganda.

Is the future of Programming Dead In Uganda? Many have asked this question and questions related to this discussion but sadly, no answers have been found.

Uganda as a country, is one of the countries with the youngest population in the world having an average age of 16.7 (years). Over 80% of the country's population is under the age of 30. But even with these statistics, the use and adaptation of new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Robotics etc. is still low due to many factors such as the high poverty rates and increased data charges. These factors have made it hard for the adventurous youth to explore the various services on the internet.

I think programming and coding should be added to Uganda's Primary and Secondary learning curriculum, just as it was done in Kenya recently, to enable the young kids get an insight of what how to interprete and play around with codes in order to practically execute their ideas to enhance their learning.

Despite the lack of knowledge in the programming field among many youths in Uganda, companies such as Code Academy Uganda have emerged to teach people and children the purpose of programming and how it could change the lives of many people in the country. They have taught many kids the basic of programming using the Scratch interface, which is more user friendly and then advanced on to the Web Developing languages such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

As a young programmer at the age of 17, I also try to do my level best to show people around my communities what programming is all about. Hopefully, I inspire many young people in many other communities with my projects so they could embrace the idea of coding and programming.

The struggle continues, but I still believe the future of Programming in Uganda is not yet dead though it might be suffocating in the Intensive Care Unit but I believe we have what it takes to make it rise again.

Together as We Can.
