Career change to IT - things you wish you knew

Hi!

I'm Michał and I'm a self-taught web developer, who started working in IT as a manual QA in December 2019. Before that I worked in biotech industry, including a pharmaceutical company in Poland.

I remember the very beginning of my career change and how much work it required (including some proper motivation). All of the doubt, roadblocks but also the excitement of learning stuff in a completely new (to me) field.

If there are people here switching to IT, or who successfully did that - what is your experience? What questions did you have at the beggining of the road that you wish were answered back then?

I want to create an episode of a podcast on the above topic (a live Q&A) where me and a bunch of other people with a similiar experience answer the questions that you would like answered. Is there something you think should be covered in that kind of content? What confused you the most when switching to IT?

Thanks in advance and (hopefully) see you soon!

Hey M,
I was also in Biotech! I loved it but wanted a change... Then I taught for a while but teaching holds no respect in the US.

I felt that I was learning the right things and in the right amounts BUT when I talked to others I found (or felt) I lagged behind. I missed certain topics or ideas that I should have picked up. In other words, there are 'tests' to say 'Now you are good enough.' It is very amorphous. The criteria for learning a skill seemed vague at times. This left me wondering where to go at times.
Cheers

That's very true. Letting myself not know certain stuff made me much less stressed and in the long run - more productive. I focused at what needed to be done, and what I need to do/learn in order to do it instead of trying to learn all of the things at once.
