Honestly, you're probably better off using another service like Vercel that provides environment variables. It also has custom domains and continuous deployment from GitHub, and I find that it is faster than Pages.
Thank you for your reply. I will have a look at Vercel. I chose GitHub Pages because I started putting my code online just a while back and I didn't really research these things. Plus, it was free.

I don't blame you at all! Pages is a great place to get started, and I only just started to use Vercel. However, it's free and almost unlimited - give it a chance! 😊

Is Vercel an alternative to Netlify?
It is - though it's a lot simpler.
