Padding is similar to wearing a thick coat; It's technically part of you and changes your width/height because it will affect how up close and personal you can be when you are giving a hug. Margin is similar to personal space; It's the extra space surrounding you that you would like to have but it doesn't change your width/height. If you require a personal space radius of 50cm and your friend requires 30cm, it doesn't mean you guys have to be 80cm apart.
