I believe I've seen more recent data in worldometers.info, they are using different sources from each country to update frequently. See if they provide some API.
Also it would be more valuable to compare total virus cases against population in 2020.
I agree that it would be more valuable to compare against the population of 2020 but I could not find any with a javascript API/GET request.
Check out opendatasoft.com or population.io, there might be free data sets for you to use when it comes to population.
