Personal Comparison of Wix and Webflow (Bite-size Article)

Introduction

Hello there!

Do you have any experience using website builders or CMS platforms for creating websites with No Code? Recently, I've started studying development with Webflow. While I had some previous experience with it, this time I'm committed to studying thoroughly, investing in resources, and taking the time to learn from the basics. As someone who usually uses technology like React for building websites and applications, trying out No Code development feels like a breath of fresh air, and I'm really enjoying learning about it.

I used to freelance and take on website projects using Wix for a considerable amount of time. Although both Wix and Webflow are No Code website builders, I've noticed significant differences in how they work and what they offer, which has caught my interest.

In this article, I'll compare Wix and Webflow and share my personal experiences, insights, and impressions. Please note that the comparison will be based on my personal experiences and opinions, but I hope it provides valuable insights for anyone interested in these platforms.

Wix

Wix (Wix.com) is a cloud-based platform provided by Wix Ltd., established in Israel in October 2006. It allows users to create websites using features such as drag-and-drop, eliminating the need for specialized knowledge in HTML or CSS. It is one of the most popular tools globally, with over 200 million users worldwide.

Key features include:

  • Ease of use: With its simple drag-and-drop interface, users can easily create websites by swapping out parts or editing text.
  • Variety of templates: Wix offers a diverse range of templates tailored to various industries and purposes, including e-commerce, social media, personal portfolios, corporate sites, etc. And also Wix has built-in content management system (CMS) functionality, so users can easily manage blog posts, e -commerce product management, among others.
  • App Market: Users can enhance their websites with additional features and integrations from the App Market, which offers both paid and free apps.

Wix offers both free and paid versions of its service. The paid version allows users to set up a custom domain, remove ads, and access premium support.

I have previously created small-scale websites for multiple small businesses using Wix, and I have had a positive impression of the platform due to its intuitive operation, making it enjoyable and easy to create websites. I have also been involved in projects related to E-commerce sites created with Wix, and when I learned that features such as inventory management and payment processing could be implemented, I was surprised by the option to implement not only simple but also advanced functionality. However, since the operation is not difficult, I would recommend it to those with minimal programming knowledge.

However, there are some drawbacks from my personal experience. For instance, many of the apps available for adding functionality come at a cost, depending on the website's needs, which can incur additional expenses. While Wix allows for intuitive website building, fine-tuning layout and adjustments can be challenging at times, leading to potential design inconsistencies.

Webflow

Webflow is a software developed by Webflow, Inc., based in San Francisco and founded in 2013. Like Wix, it is known as a globally popular No-Code Website Builder.

Key features include:

  • Flexibility and Customization: Webflow offers advanced customization features through direct editing of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, as well as the ability to add animations and interactive elements. Designed for professional designers and developers, Webflow enables advanced customization and design possibilities.

  • Design: Webflow provides features to achieve pixel-perfect designs, offering classic layout options like grid systems and flexboxes, which are familiar to CSS users, allowing for precise design adjustments.

  • CMS Functionality: Webflow includes a built-in CMS for easy management and updates of dynamic content. This enables efficient construction of content-driven websites such as blogs or portfolios.

Similar to Wix, Webflow offers both paid and free plans, with various differences depending on the plan, including limitations on the number of pages and other features. And also many of templates they offer are not free.

These features make Webflow a powerful tool for professional web designers and developers to build advanced websites and applications.

Additionally, Webflow offers compatibility for exporting code and migrating to WordPress, which adds a more professional element compared to Wix. However, it might be more challenging for those without programming or design experience due to its steeper learning curve. Nevertheless, for those like myself who regularly engage in programming, especially those with experience in HTML and CSS, understanding the tool's concept may be more straightforward.

Personal Comparison

Personally, I think Wix is more suitable for beginners in web development and programming, while Webflow is better suited for creating meticulously designed, professional websites with advanced functionality.

For me, if I'm short on time and need to create something quickly, Wix is the best option. But, if I have the time and want to fine-tune the design, I prefer using Webflow.

However, the choice of tool ultimately depends on what kind of website you want to create, so, I believe it's beneficial to choose and try out the tool that intuitively appeals to you.

Conclusion

I have previously learned about and used Wix for work, so revisiting and comparing it with Webflow has been a very enjoyable experience. Both tools have their own pros and cons, and their user interfaces and usability are completely different, which makes it fascinating.

Both tools offer free plan, so if you're interested, I encourage everyone reading this article to give them a try.

Thank you for reading :)
