Please welcome Johannes as a member of the JS Kongress 2020 Program Committee. 
Johannes has been contributing to the #DeepTrack since its first edition on #jskongress 2017, now he will also play a part in shaping the main stage schedule.
Upfront, we have asked him a couple of questions:
- Why are you looking forward to #jskongress?
I’ve attended every JS Kongress so far and it has always been an awesome conference. Especially the Deep Track — an unconference with developers, industry experts, and users — is a unique concept I haven’t seen anywhere else yet. I also think that the JS Kongress is filling an interesting niche: it’s an international conference with well-known speakers from all around the world but still with affordable ticket prices, which is really good in terms of openness and inclusiveness because not everyone is working for a company that’s willing to pay high ticket prices.
- What do you think about or associate with the 2020 motto “Scaling JS — Pushing the Limits: Massive Platforms, Data-Driven Architectures, and Modern APIs”?
“Scaling JS — Pushing the Limits” could be the guiding theme for JavaScript in general. Who would have thought in 1995 that people would fly drones with this “toy language”? In art, there is this idea of creative limitation, which means that limitations can be a source of creativity. So maybe it’s a good thing that JavaScript isn’t the most powerful language in the world. You could say: like a poet that needs the meter, the JavaScript developer needs its quirks to create awesome things like … ComcastifyJS which gives you back “the thrill of a long page load” (just kidding :))
- What’s your vision for the program?
I would like to see contributions from a diverse range of people with totally different backgrounds. It’s really important to have all of them on stage so that others get inspired and motivated to join our community. Personally I’m very interested in tech-heavy talks that go into a lot of detail but for the purpose of a balanced program, we also need people who are capable of giving comprehensible introductions into complex topics.
- Do you remember, when you got in touch with JS for the very first time? What was the reason for it, or who?
Yes! Back in 1999, I’ve already learned some HTML and CSS to build a glorious “homepage”. Then I saw this sick mouseover effect on a friend’s website. I wanted to know how the heck he did it and took a look at the source code. But I had no idea what all those strange braces meant so I gave up. It took several years before I came back to JavaScript. In the meantime, I’ve already done some Java and ActionScript during my studies which made it a lot easier for me to understand JavaScript. Finally, I was ready to create that sick mouseover. Unfortunately, I had no homepage anymore.
- Do you have some motivation for all speakers and everyone who thinks about submitting their idea for a talk?
If you know a topic you would like to talk about but you think that no one else likes to hear it: just submit your idea. I’ve met inspiring speakers that were surprised about the positive feedback because they thought their topics were boring. I also made the experience that people with less technical understanding can sometimes give better explanations for beginners because they can better relate to their mindset. So don’t let that prevent you from submitting your idea. And if you get rejected: I know how you feel. None of my proposals were ever accepted!
