How and why do you attend conference?

Question to Dev Community friends. What is your algorithm or process to decide if you want to attend a tech conference? If you decide to attend what is that you will look for from the sessions which you plan to attend?

tech conf ==> absolute scam.
Super expensive (many hundreds dollars/euros/etc) little content, a lot of self congratulation, moral pretention. it is only good for companies who wants to offer small holidays to their devs, but no dev should put his own money for that.

Meetups are much better, generally free, there is content, interaction, community building.

Thanks @olivvv for the thoughts. What are your thoughts on Code Camps and Community based Conference?

I have never attended any of those, so no opinion.

Community based Conference sounds like a meetup with a lot of presenters, if that is the case, that would be my thing.
For code camps, do you have in mind a thing that takes many days and ppl are coding during long hours for free ? if so, the audience is going to be rather students than professionals. Professionals expect to be paid for their work...

I attend more community conferences based around process or concepts more than any other type events such as SQL Saturday or DevOps Days events. I attend Tech Conferences when it's a technology my company is highly invested in such as Microsoft Ignite.

My goal for both type of events are the same learn new things and meet new people.

Thanks @gogorichie for sharing your thoughts. Yes learning new things and meeting new people are things I also consider while attending community conferences.

I have YouTube, which essentially gives me tech talks for free.

Conferences are low value to effort relative to that.

Once every blue moon you might spot me at a meetup trying awkwardly to be social.

Agree that more talks are available for free on YouTube but identifying which one's are coming from people who have tried what they speak and people who plagarize content is difficult. If a conference encourages these Learning,
Inspiration,Sharing,TeamDevelopment,Empowering and finally Networking (LISTEN) at an affordable level , I will be attending them.
