What's the exact difference between a SOFTWARE and an APPLICATION?

These two terms (Software & Application) are often used interchangeably, but what exactly is the difference between them? If any.

This is what I think:

SOFTWARE is a set of instructions or data that operates the hardware while APPLICATION is a package to perform a specific task.
