If you’re old like me, you may remember when John Allspaw and Paul Hammond made waves in 2009 with their talk “10+ Deploys per Day” (well worth the watch if you’ve never seen it).
In 2009, I was working on a team of 3 developers. We were struggling to achieve Joel Spolsky’s suggestion of a one-step build. Even the idea of 10 deploys per day seemed utterly ridiculous. Deployment took a minimum of 2 hours on a good day. What voodoo would be required to do 10+ deployments per day? It was inconcievable!
Now in 2021, the industry has realized that 10, 100, even 1,000+ deploys per day is quite achievable. The question is no longer “can we do this?” but “should we do this?”
If that’s not progress, I don’t know what is!
