hmm, not sure I agree we all "have to be" on social media (specifically twitter) I think social media makes people "think" they have to be there, even if they don't. This is especially the case for beginners since they see these 'dev influencers' doing all sorts of stuff they want to achieve and constantly pushing the 'keep writing blogs or this is what I did to grow my twitter following from x to n" kind of message.

If one surrounds themselves with people active on social media and tout social media's benefits, then yes, it will make it look like you are being left behind if you down have a twitter.

I consider social media presence is different than general online presence, such as a personal brand, portfolio website or LinkedIn account. But maybe LinkedIn is considered social media, so, perhaps you are right in that sense.

Even now, I look at the people I work with and many don't have tech twitter accounts or blog and they've all have jobs. I also grew my career without it though, I also have been doing development for longer.
