A router is a device used to connect two or more networks together. Routers use multiple network protocols (such as IP, TCP, and ICMP) to route packets of information through the network from one machine to another. In addition, routers can be used to provide proper security by setting up firewalls and allowing only authorized access to particular network components. Routers can also be used for Quality of Service (QoS) control, providing prioritization of traffic for time-sensitive applications.
