Getting Started with TypeScript

TypeScript is a popular programming language that is a super set of JavaScript. It adds features such as static typing, classes, and interfaces to the flexibility of JavaScript. In this blog post, we will learn how to set up a new TypeScript project and write some basic TypeScript code.

  1. Installation To use TypeScript, you’ll need to install it on your machine. You can do this by using npm, which is a package manager for JavaScript. If you don’t have npm installed already, you can follow this guide: https://www.npmjs.com/get-npm

Within your npm project, run the following command to install TypeScript:

npm install typescript --save-dev

This will add TypeScript as a development dependency to your project.

  1. Configuration Next, you’ll need to create a tsconfig.json file in the root directory of your project. This file contains the configuration options for the TypeScript compiler. You can use the following command to generate a tsconfig.json file with some default settings:
npx tsc --init

You can open the file in an editor and modify it according to your needs. For example, you can change the target option to specify which version of JavaScript you want TypeScript to compile to. You can also change the outDir option to specify where you want TypeScript to output the compiled JavaScript files.

  1. Basic Types One of the main benefits of TypeScript is that it allows you to define types for your variables and parameters. This helps you catch errors at compile time and improve code readability and maintainability.

TypeScript supports most of the basic types that JavaScript has, such as number, string, boolean, array, object etc. You can also use any type if you don’t want to specify a type explicitly.

To declare a variable with a type annotation in TypeScript, use this syntax:

let name: string = "John";

To declare a function parameter with a type annotation in TypeScript, use this syntax:

const greet = (name: string) => {
  console.log("Hello " + name);
}

You can also use type annotations for return values of functions:

const add = (a: number , b: number): number => {
  return a + b;
}

  1. Classes and Interfaces TypeScript also supports object-oriented programming concepts such as classes and interfaces. Classes are templates for creating objects that have properties and methods. Interfaces are contracts that define what properties and methods an object should have.

To define a class in TypeScript, use this syntax:

class Person {
  name: string;
  age: number;

  constructor(name: string , age: number) {
    this.name = name;
    this.age = age;
  }

  greet() {
    console.log("Hello " + this.name);
  }
}

To create an instance of a class in TypeScript , use this syntax:

let person = new Person('John', 25);

To define an interface in TypeScript , use this syntax:

interface Animal {
  name: string;
  sound: string;
}

To implement an interface in TypeScript , use this syntax:

class Dog implements Animal {
  name: string;

  constructor(name: string) {
    this.name = name;
    this.sound = "Woof";
  }

  1. Working with TypeScript in an Editor or IDE To write and run TypeScript code effectively , you’ll need an editor or IDE that supports TypeScript features such as syntax highlighting , auto-completion , error checking etc.

Some popular editors and IDEs that support TypeScript are Visual Studio Code , WebStorm , Atom etc.

You can also use online tools such as CodeSandbox or StackBlitz to write and run TypeScript code without installing anything on your machine.
