CodeIgniter is a popular PHP framework that allows developers to create web applications rapidly. It is known for its small footprint, easy-to-learn syntax, and flexibility. CodeIgniter packages, also known as libraries or modules, are pre-built code blocks that can be added to a CodeIgniter project to enhance its functionality or simplify common tasks.
Packages in CodeIgniter can be either official or community-created, and they can be easily installed using the Composer package manager. Official packages are maintained by the CodeIgniter development team and are included in the framework’s core. They provide additional features such as database connectivity, caching, and email functionality.
Community-created packages are typically open-source and available on platforms like GitHub. They are built by other developers and can be easily integrated into CodeIgniter projects to add features like user authentication, payment processing, and social media integration.
The IP2Location.io PHP SDK is a community-created package that enables users to retrieve an enhanced data set associated with an IP address. This data set includes a variety of information such as the country, region, city, district, latitude, longitude, ZIP code, time zone, ASN, ISP, domain, net speed, IDD code, area code, weather station data, MNC, MCC, mobile brand, elevation, usage type, address type, advertisement category, and proxy data. The enriched data set is available for both IPv4 and IPv6 address lookups.
This tutorial shows how to use the IP2Location.io PHP SDK in the CodeIgniter framework to retrieve the geolocation information for viewing and page redirection.
First of all, we assume that the CodeIgniter framework had been properly set up before following this tutorial. The IP2Location.io PHP SDK requires API key to function. You may sign up for a free API key at https://www.ip2location.io/pricing. Do note that the continent, country, region and city translations are only available in the Plus and Security plans.
Display Geolocation Data Sample Code
Run the command below to download the package into the CodeIgniter platform
composer require ip2location/ip2location-io-php
Create a TestController.php in CodeIgniter root project-root/app/Controllers.
Open the project-root/app/Controllers/TestController.php in any text editor.
Add the below lines into the controller file to use IP2Location.io PHP SDK:
<?php
namespace App\Controllers;
class TestController extends BaseController
{
public function index()
{
// Configure IP2Location.io API key
$config = new \IP2LocationIO\Configuration('YOUR_API_KEY');
$ip2locationio = new \IP2LocationIO\IPGeolocation($config);
try {
// Lookup IP address geolocation data

$routes->get('test', 'TestController::index');
Enter the URL /test and run. You should be able to see the information of 8.8.8.8 IP address.
Done.
Page Redirection Sample Code
Run the command below to download the package into the CodeIgniter platform
composer require ip2location/ip2location-io-php
Add the below lines into the Controller file that you used for redirection:
// Configure IP2Location.io API key
$config = new \IP2LocationIO\Configuration('YOUR_API_KEY');
$ip2locationio = new \IP2LocationIO\IPGeolocation($config);
// Get visitor IP address for lookup
$result = $ip2locationio->lookup($_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']);
// Redirect the US visitors to the specific page
if ($result->country_code == 'US') {
return redirect()->to('/');
}
Done.
Upon completion of this tutorial, you are able to perform an IP geolocation lookup and implement redirection using the IP2Location.io PHP SDK in the CodeIgniter framework. This will enable you to obtain the geolocation information of a user, which can be utilized for data analytics and page redirection purposes.
