I worked with one recruiter who was working with a consulting company, they churn out mobile apps for big name clients and I was applying to work with them. We got along just fine and he set up a phone screen with this company. I felt decently confident about the phone screen because I had actual experience with iOS and Android.

When it comes time to the interview, the recruiter and his assistant give me a call first to brief me on high level details, and then they patched me through to the hiring manager and we start the technical interview.

My strategy had been to talk at length about all the projects that I worked on - overcompensating for the lack of any "real" company experience. The only downside to the convo that I remember was that I started rambling about one project a little too much talking about rest API requests. The convo went ok, but it didn't seem like it was much of a fit. Onto the next one, or so I thought.

After the phone screen wrapped up, the recruiter called me back and said, hey - so what happened? I didn't quite get what he was talking about so I started giving him my take on the interview. This is when he started berating me - he said that his assistant was on the line listening to the interview, that I didn't know what I was talking about, that I just finished making him look bad to the CTO of the company because he only brings in top notch candidates, and lastly that I embarrassed him (exact quote: "You embarrassed me") so they were no longer going to work with me.

My morale was pretty shot after that, albeit confused because it felt like I had one conversation and they heard another. Who knows? Maybe it was actually really that bad.

The good news was that I found a company I very much enjoyed, at a salary 20k higher than the other company, just about 2 weeks later, and have been there ever since. I feel good about it because that recruiter lost out on a hefty commission, so I had the last laugh.
