If you want to work in finance, you need have a few key talents and characteristics. In this article, I'll go through the essential skills and characteristics you need have if you want to work in finance, as well as how they may help your company. Here are five that I believe are crucial:
1. Accounting knowledge: This means understanding how to read financial statements and how a company's financial activity is recorded. Even if you're not specifically working in accounting, this knowledge is really important for anyone in finance.
2. Business acumen: Finance is connected to lots of different parts of a company, so it's important to understand how different operations and transactions affect the company's finances. For example, if a company has a clause in its contract that says it will be paid less if it doesn't deliver on time, you need to understand how that affects the company's revenue.
3. Analytical skills: There's a lot of data and information in finance, so it's important to be able to understand it and figure out what it means for the company. The better you can do this, the more valuable you'll be to your company.
4. Business partnering: In finance, you're there to support other parts of the company. That means you need to be able to work well with people in other departments and understand their needs.
5. IT and data literacy: Technology is really important in finance these days, so it's important to be comfortable with things like Excel and ERP software. If you can also program RPA software or create automated reports, that's even better.
If you're interested in working in finance, make sure you work on developing these skills. And if you know someone who's just starting out in finance, share this article with them!
