Hey Everyone, I'm Mohd Imran and I attended KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America 2022 virtually from 24 oct to 28 oct. This was my first ever event/conference I attended in my life and In this article I will be sharing my experience with you.

How I got to know about the event?

I got to know about the event through Kunal Kushwaha 's post on LinkedIn. He shared about the event and also about the scholarship that we can get to attend the event. I applied for the scholarship and I got selected for the virtual scholarship of the event.

My Experience

I attended the event virtually and this was my first ever event/conference that I attended. Although most of the session/talk were in-person only, there were plenty of sessions/talk that were available virtually. The complete event was of 4 days in total from 24 oct'2022 to 28 oct'2022. I attended a lot of sessions/talk and learned a lot of things. I learned about so many Cloud Native projects and tools. I got to interact with so many amazing people in the slack server. I met so many people who were on same stage as me and learned a lot from them.

Mentor-Mentee Framework To Build the Next Generation Of Cloud Native - Kunal Kushwaha & Mark Boost, Civo

In this session, Kunal Kushwahaand Mark Boost from Civo talked about Mentor and Mentee framework and how their relationship should be. I will cover the whole session in key points below.

1. Reach out to Mentors in a professional manner.

• Give enough context while reaching out.
• Do networking with them on social media, don't be afraid to reach out to people.
• Make sure your dedication and passion for the subject is clear.

2. Develop a clear plan.

• Agree to a frequency of ho often both should discuss over different goals and things to learn.
• Agree to a session format ( but don't be too rigid ).
• Agree to short and long term objectives ( align to interests and personal goals ).

3. Respect your Mentor

• Their time is valuable and they usually have a busy schedule.
• Honor your commitments.
• Don't be late.
• Make allowances for their busy schedule.

4. Ensure it's a two way relationship.

5. Various ways by which you can get started

• Contribute ( Community, Open Source, Writing, Advocate on socials )
• offer help/support wherever possible.
• Be polite and respectful.

6. How to be a good Mentor

• Build Empathy
• Get to know the person, their family, friends, interests ( movies, sports, food, travel, etc. )
• Provide opportunity to ask you questions or even challenge you.
• You can also learn from mentee.
• Always be available for your mentee ( outside of structured sessions ).
• Have fun, don't make it too structured.

7. Review your progress periodically

• Agree to review frequency ( Every 3 months recommended ).
• Create an environment for honest and constructive feedback.

8. Be honest with feedback on both sides.
