7 Cool Tips to Write Your Twitter Bio as a Developer πŸ‘πŸ’―

Everyone wants their Twitter profile to look attractive, software engineers are no exception.

Next to your name, your Twitter Bio is the first thing people notice about you. The few words you put on there reflect your personality and what others should expect from you. This research reveals how companies are using Twitter to find talents.

But you can't write every nitty-gritty about yourself in 160 characters. As programmers, we prefer to code, not communicate or do sales. So it might be difficult to come up with Twitter bios ideas in 160 chars.

Here are 7 proven tips with examples you can use to write a cool Twitter Bio.

1. Tell us you are a software engineer

@daominique Twitter bio

First things first. People won't know what you do unless you tell them. Adding you're software engineer to your Bio is one way.

2. Be optimistic, use an upbeat tone

@jomaoppa Twitter bi

You mustn't say it the way Joma did. But be optimistic about what you do in a few words. In the previous example, @daominique added: β€œTeacher to Tech πŸ‘¨πŸ»β€πŸ’» in 1.5 yrs” which communicates he is proud to start a career in tech.

PS: Another hack to this is if you are young or way older you can mention your age to show optimism. E.g 13 years old learning to code in Python, 55 years old man turn JavaScript Engineer.

3. Niche down or add your experience

Riches are in niches they say. So how about adding some unique skills or expertise or experience? E.g Python/NLP Engineer. Prev @Twillo. It's obvious you are a better fit for NLP roles than just any Python Engineer. Your mention of NLP and Twillo speaks volumes more than just writing Software Engineer.

4. Mention your accomplishments

@thesegunadebayo

GitHub Star creator is what mentioning. Not all achievements are weighed the same. But mentioning your accomplishment communicates a lot of messages and adds credibility to what you do. Like the example below:

Software Engineer with a flair for Open Source. Created the #1 WP Stripe Plugin which got acquired by @stripe.

If it's a single calculator you built you may want to include that, especially as this is a considerable accomplishment for someone seeking an entry/internship role.

5. Be Authentic. Talk about the things you love. But don't over do it.

@erinfoox

You have read several bios. They mostly look similar. Everyone loves dogs, coffee, or mentions Cats in their bio. It tells you how authenticity is important. You mustn't try to be authentic in your Twitter bio. But you can just say something you love, hate, or belief. e.g Chelsea Lover.

6. Write something intriguing that makes people follow you. Tell people what kind of content and tweets you’ll be posting.

@sumitsaurabh927 Twitter Profile

If you intend to build a following like Sumit, then you should tell people why they should follow you. Another example I love is from Suprabha.

Her Twitter bio follows the old and tested blogging formula - Find a schedule, stick with it, and tell people about it. Plus she added credibility in her last line by mentioning she is a Senior Frontend Engineer.

7. Use keywords, fewer words, hashtags, and relevant links in your bio.

I saw this profile by typing "web3" into the Twitter search bar. Adding keywords and hashtags in your bio is a great way for people to find you. This research reveals how companies are using Twitter to find talents.

What is your take on this? Do you have any tips you can share that will help future readers make their bio attractive?

Thanks for reading.
