Where to get Linux help

cover image: HenSti

Where you find useful help online may change with the flavor of Linux you are using. You need to know the distribution you are using so you can get the right help when you have specific questions. Distribution specific forums; Such as the Arch Linux BBS or the Ubuntu Forums; are indispensable. Beyond that, some of the topics covered for one distribution might be relevant for any other. General forums like Linux Questions or Unix Stack Exchange can help you with general questions. Hopefully, not before taking a peek at the man pages!

For new people, always read the forum rules, always try to make some effort to answer your question yourself, before asking someone else to do the effort and when you do ask for help, be helpful giving useful information, avoid being vague and don't waste others time and always keep in mind, is YOUR problem, others are trying to help you even tho they get close to nothing for it. Is not their duty nor their job (unless it actually is and you are contacting support from RedHat of course, be nice even then tho).

Ask for help, be gentle, be humble, be grateful. And try to help others in the way.

I would add, if you like face to face interaction, seek out your local Linux user group, then go geek out :)
