I think the best way is to start working on something right on the first day. Even a simple thing can give a sense of accomplishment and help the new hire feel great.
It happened to me once, a team mate asked if I was familiar with Linux, I said yes and he took me to another guy that was struggling with a problem. He was on another team so I didn’t start with my real job on that day, but I immediately felt good as I had helped a guy in the company.

I love this idea! Such a great way to build relationships with other teams and make the new team member feel like they are making a contribution from day one.
