If your WordPress website was a neighborhood, menus would be the directions map. So, menus are essential parts of a website because they are where visitors will look at when discovering your site. To make sure your menu is a useful sign, you need to know important operations such as adding a new page to a menu section or renaming an available item on it. If you want to learn about that, our tutorial will be definitely helpful.
There are two ways to add new pages and rename pages on a menu.
- Through Customizer on your WordPress page
- Through the WordPress Admin Dashboard
Let's dive into these steps in this article.
First of all, sign in your WordPress site and select the Customize button. On wordpress.org, it is at the top management bar of the page.
After you click Customize, a custom column on the left will appear. This section is used to change different elements, mainly the appearance. Find and click the Menus tab.
This Menu section will show all the menus that were created and their positions on the website. If you want to add a new page to a certain menu, just click that menu. For example, I choose to edit the Main menu.
When you tap the Add Items button, another extra column will show up.
- At Custom Links, you can choose to add links to any other WordPress website that you want. Copy the link and paste it into the URL box, and the item's name in the Link Text will display on the menu.
- Plus, you can also add Page, Post, Category, Tags, or Format to the menu.
Now, click the item you want and it will be automatically added to your menu. You can sort the order of the items on the menu by dragging up or down. In addition, an item on a menu can have multiple levels. To create a lower-level item, you can drag it to the right just below the higher-level one. Low-level items don't appear directly on the menu unless you hover the higher-level item.
Note that in the Location Menu section, you're allowed to select the location to display the menu. Typically, a theme will have a primary menu in the header. In addition, some themes usually have footer menus in the footer, top-bar menu at the top bar, or social menu showing the icons or names of your social media. You just need to tick the location for your menu.
For example, the Memory theme allows displaying only one position which is the Primary menu in the header.
First, click the tab of the section you want to replace. For example, I want to rename the Travel item, then click the tab of this section.
After you choose the item, you'll see a rectangular frame like this. In the Label Navigation section, delete your old name and type your new name. And you will immediately see the change of your name's website on the menu bar in the preview section.
This renaming in the Label Navigation section will only affect the title displayed on the menu bar, not the pages' names in other places. So if you want to completely change the category name, page name, or an article, you have to do another work.
Last but not least, press Publish. If you leave the page without making this final step, your page can't be added or renamed. So, don't forget it!
In addition to using the Customizer that I mentioned above, you can also add a new page to the Menu or rename the page through the WordPress Admin.
First, sign in to your WordPress page and open the WordPress Admin then select Appearance (1) > Menu (2). Next, select the menu you want to add a new item or rename (3) then press the button Select to start editing.
Now, if you want to add a new item to the menu, tick the box of the item you want (1) and click Add to menu (2). Just like in the Customizer, click the tab of the item you want to rename (3) and type the new name in the Label Navigation (4). Remember to do the last step: Save Menu (5).
This is the result after changing the Food demo menu to Photography demo.
With this thorough tutorial, you'll totally be able to add new pages and rename pages in the WordPress menu just by these super easy steps.
Using the Customizer will help you see the menu changes more visually than on the Admin Dashboard. But maybe you will find using the Admin Dashboard a bit simpler. Depending on your hobbies and habits, you can try to find which way that suits you best.
There are many other actions related to using Customizer and changing the theme's displayed information. Keep following us to learn about that!
