Ballot-tracking software — what works and what doesn't?

Hey all!

For those of you who are U.S.-based, it's a stressful moment in our country. We're on nearing up on an important presidential election and, at the risk of parroting a cliché, every vote counts. Hey, clichés are often clichés for a reason 😉

Given the global coverage of elections in the United States, I'd venture to say that many DEV community members across the world are paying close attention to this election cycle, too.

I'm not a developer, but I am a voter and I have a question about some election-related software for all of you.

My question

As a developer, how do you feel about BallotTrax or similar ballot-tracking software? If you're a user, what would you change about the UX/UI? How can we improve this service in terms of accessibility? Any other thoughts?

For those of you that are not aware of this, BallotTrax basically allows you to track your ballot (on its way to being delivered to your address and on the outbound journey so you can ensure your vote is counted). This is a particularly important program during a pandemic when many folks have no choice but to vote-by-mail (thank you, USPS!). To my knowledge, this service is only offered in some states, but I suspect that will change after a year of record mail-in voting.

I'd love to hear your professional/hobbyist opinions!

I'll tell you what most certainly does not seem to have worked: Any fraudulent "blockchain" solutions that were sold to the government a couple years ago. I haven't read of any actual success there— Not that it couldn't theoretically help, I just think they've mostly done more harm than good (or at least that's what I've read)

I dont trust anything that is made by a private company that is not OSS. Smells like obama care fiasco all over again. A new branch in our gov needs to be created that handles stuff of this nature with internal coding teams, just like how Nasa used to work. Starting out as a private industry is a TERRIBLE IDEA, designs will be made for the gram.
