Sometimes you can't just from the looks (sound) of it. This is called "conversion", a grammatical process that turns a word from one category (e.g. noun) into a word of a different category (e.g. verb) without any change in appearance (sound). Example: Google (noun) - to google (verb).
There are word order and other grammatical criteria to distinguish such words, though.
Haven't thought about the same thing being different category in a different context.
