Say Goodbye to Google Domains + Favorite Alternatives

It wasn’t a long time ago when Google Domains emerged out of beta, and many folks in the tech field were especially excited about it.

Which company is more reliable than Google to trust with your domain names?! Their prices are very reasonable and you can take advantage of Google’s solid Cloud DNS for free.

Well, as it turns out, Google isn’t that reliable of a domain registrar after all! They unexpectedly decided to pull the plug on the service and sell all assets to Squarespace.

The decision is final and they’re just waiting for regulatory approvals before transferring all customers and their domains from Google Domains to Squarespace.

That’s not good news for many...

First of all, who uses Squarespace to register domains anyway? It’s primarily a website building and hosting service, and although they are an ICANN accredited registrar, domain registration is more of a secondary service or an “add-on” to their main service (website builder).

Their domain pricing isn’t very competitive compared to Google Domains and other popular registrars out there. For example, a dot-com costs $20 per year and it doesn’t even come with full Whois privacy. You do get free Whois redaction, which isn’t the same as a full Whois privacy feature.

I believe there are better and more affordable registrars to transfer your domains to, and the following are my top recommendations for a Google Domains alternative to consider:

NameCheap

Although their renewal rates aren’t as low as they used to be a few years ago, NameCheap is still one of the most affordable registrars with a solid reputation. They often have worthy discounts on new registrations and you get full Whois privacy at no additional cost.

Dynadot

This is my top choice for a cheap domain registrar which I’ve been using for many years now. Their renewal prices for most generic TLDs are among the lowest on the market and they don’t bombard you with sneaky upsell offers.

NameSilo

I’ve also been keeping a few domains at NameSilo for a while and everything has been great so far; well, except for the shoddy admin interface design they have. I know many domainers don’t mind that given the highly competitive pricing they offer for registrations and renewals, especially for bulk orders.
