I totally agree with you! I feel that going down to the nitty gritty, learning about computer architecture, data structures, algorithms, and so on instead of just using a framework / library is super useful.
During my time at the university I had to choose between different courses and I always found it hard to do that. There is so much to learn. Luckily the internet is full of information and in CS most of the papers can be accessed free of charge.
