Are you traveling for work ?

Last month i had to travel for my work. It's not the first time for me but it's not usual.

So i launch the debate here :

Are you often traveling for your work as a developer?

And what is the absolute things you need to take for working during your travel ?

for me i have tested screen sharing app

Before I moved out of the individual-contributor (aka developer) role, I had done a decent amount of travel, the context on that situation:

  • My startup in Chicago was acquired by a competitor in Austin Texas. I was one of the senior-most engineers who remained after the exit.
  • I was the team lead building the company's new unified product
  • The trips were mostly for planning purposes, so I only needed to bring my laptop and critical thinking skills while we discussed technical challenges and competing priorities for the roadmap.
  • Additionally, our Private Equity backers host a variety of different workshops to grow individuals, and I traveled for a couple of those events as developer.

My Top 5 Travel Necessities

  • Electronics Organizer: Buy one of these and pre-stock it with 1 of every cord you need, then just carry with you in your everyday backpack or toss in your luggage when you have to go further
  • TSA Pre-check: If you're flying more than once a year for work or fun, it's a worthwhile investment to minimize potential stress making your flight.
  • Noise Cancelling Headphones
  • Comfortable walking shoes. You'd be surprised how much walking you may find yourself doing.
  • Zofran - because I'm usually regretting the amount of alcohol that was consumed at least one evening during a work trip.
