Aubrey Zulu is a Software Developer at BongoHive Consult based in Lusaka, Zambia. Aubrey shared with us his background story about how he got into the industry and what his experience has been, in our developer spotlight series. Here is what we got to know about Aubrey.

1. Tell us about yourself before you got into the tech industry.

I was working as an Auto-Electrician for Sable Transport Limited, I had to quit my job because it did not give me enough time to focus on learning to code, the thing I was passionate about. Then I started helping people pass their G.C.E exams by teaching them science while coding during my spare time.

2. How did you get into the tech industry?

I have been passionate about science and technology from a tender age, I loved playing with phones and computers. The time came when I wanted to do more with computers instead of just doing basic things like, flashing of phones, fixing internet connection issues or installing software. I wanted to connect with technology at a deeper level and find more meaning, hence I started teaching myself how to code.

3. Could you share a little bit about what a typical day is like for you.

Mostly my day starts with standups, syncing up on projects with team members, then I get to coding.

4. What do you do outside of coding.

Some of the things I do when I am not coding include: exploring places, visiting friends and families, learning to dance 🕺 and playing video games.

5. Any developer horror stories you’ve had in the past.

No, not yet had one.

6. What do you think has been your greatest accomplishment in your tech journey?

Getting employed as a software developer and working with the technologies I love.

7. What advice would you give to a young developer starting their developer journey.

Programming is not easy and you will not become a programmer overnight, it takes patience, lots of practice, ups and down but as you continue doing it, you will begin to get the hang of it and start becoming better and better. Make sure to surround yourself with like minds e.g. a developer community.

8. How would you use technology to help your immediate environment?

Help business establish an online presence, so that they are able to reach out to their customers easier and faster.

9. Can anybody be a developer?

It depends. Happiness comes from solving problems. Programming is about solving problems, if solving problems makes you a happier person and it release dopamine go for it.

10. Do you have any developers out there that inspire you to keep doing better at what you do?

I don’t have any specific person in mind, but these days I am inspired by great products that are changing the world. e.g. Slack, Facebook. Great software inspires me to do better.

We thank Aubrey for the insightful information he shared and for letting us get to know him more. If you want to give him a follow on social media, you can find him on Twitter and LinkedIn.
