AVERAGE Function – Description:
- This function returns the arithmetic mean of given input numbers.
- AVERAGE will accept up to 255 arguments that can be numbers, array, cell references, ranges, and constants.
Syntax:
=AVERAGE(number1, [number2],..)
Arguments Explanation:
*Number1 – * It is the first input number, cell reference, or range.
*Number2 – * It is an optional one. This is the second input number, cell reference, or range.
Note:
- If the arguments contain Text , Logical values , or Empty cells , it will be ignored.
- This function includes zero values.
Examples:
Let’s see some examples to understand this concept quickly.
Example 1:
- In the below example image, you can see the input numbers in Column B , C , and D. The output values are displayed in Column F.
Example 2 – Ignores Blank Cell:
- If the arguments contain Text , Logical values , or Empty cells , it will be ignored.
- This function includes zero as values.
Mixed Arguments:
- You can also use mixed arguments ( mix of references and constants ) in this function.
- The below screenshot has shown mixed arguments in the formula bar as ( B3 , B4 , B5 , 22 , 18 ) and its output is printed in Cell D3.
AVERAGE with Criteria:
- If you need to find an average for the range of input cells with any criteria or condition , then you can use AVERAGEIFor AVERAGEIFSfunctions in Excel.
- Refer to the below example where you can see the input ranges in Column C & D. The output is printed in the cells G3 ( average marks of female ) & G4 ( average marks of male ).
AVERAGE top n Values:
- You can also calculate an *average of top n values by combining AVERAGE and LARGE Function. *
- This screenshot has shown the formula in the formula bar. It represents the top 3 values from each row.
Weighted Average:
- If you want to calculate the weighted average, you need to use SUMPRODUCT Function.
- In this image, you can see the input ranges in Column B, C, and D. The weights are given in the range *G4:I4. *
- The weighted average values are listed in Column E.
