I've come to dislike the term impostor syndrome. I think the fact is that programming is an incredibly complex field and as you mature, you start to realize how much you don't know and how much specialized knowledge can be required to accomplish tasks that look easy because they execute in seconds but really are incredibly specialized programs. There's a lot of unknown unknowns out there and we just have to make peace with that. There will always be someone smarter than you. There will always be times when you don't know the answer that very second or you regret your response immediately.
I think we just need to learn to take a deep breath and move on in these situations. As long as you are still learning and you have found something that makes you happy (I never said it had to be even remotely related to programming), that's a win in my book.
Hey Scott, thanks for the comment. Yes, we just need a deep breath and move on but impostor syndrome is common that there is a need to highlight it. There will always be more to learn and there will be someone smarter than us but we need to cure for the emotions that are guiding our actions.
