All-but-one software development position I have gotten has been through a reference. I'm an introvert, yet even my meager "networking" has been greatly helpful for my career.
I had been a software developer for 20 years before I got my bachelor's degree in computer science. Did I need it for my career? I don't think so. I got it for my own edification and personal satisfaction.
Is a degree necessary? No. But it can open doors, merely because it gets you past the human resources screeners.

I do believe if my interviewers are from the opening department(instead of HR) , I would have gotten a shot.
Thanks for the advice
