The Essential Skills for Success as an Engineer, based on 500 responses

I recently asked on Twitter:

After a few days, I was amazed by the responses, comments, and discussions generated. Hence I decided to gather the most common answers and create a short article!

Hope you like it, let's start. πŸš€

Introduction

Being a developer or engineer is a challenging and rewarding profession that requires a diverse set of skills. In today's fast-paced tech industry, it's essential to have a strong understanding of both technical and personal skills in order to be successful.

In this article, we will explore the most important skills required for success as a developer or engineer.

1. Problem-Solving πŸ€”

One of the most important skills for a developer or engineer is the ability to solve problems. This includes not only being able to analyze data and come up with solutions quickly and efficiently but also having a strong understanding of algorithmic problem-solving. Being a great problem solver and being able to sit down and Sherlock Holmes your way through tracking down and fixing complex bugs is an important skill for a developer/engineer. In addition to this, learning how to effectively use Google and other search tools, as well as having the tenacity to keep trying different solutions through trial and error, is crucial for success in this field.

2. Communication and Collaboration πŸ‘―β€β™‚οΈ

Another important skill for a developer or engineer is the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with others. The single most important skill as an engineer is collaboration. Everything else derives from it. This includes being able to speak to stakeholders, refine requirements, and communicate final results in a way that can be understood by non-technical people. It also includes being able to work well in teams, which is becoming increasingly important as the tech industry becomes more focused on building solutions together.

3. Personal Skills πŸ˜‡

In addition to these technical skills, personal skills such as resilience, discipline, and communication skills are also critical for success as a developer or engineer. Being able to think like a customer and having a product or customer sensitivity is also important. Also, having patience and the ability to listen to understand are also important. Having the ability to "separate waters" with what's tech debt and value proposition and having a product/customer sensitivity is crucial for a developer/engineer.

4. Adaptability and Learning πŸ“–

Maybe the most common answer was: willingness to learn!

Adaptability and a willingness to learn are essential skills for success as a developer or engineer. The technology industry is constantly evolving, and new frameworks and technologies are emerging on a regular basis. In order to stay competitive and excel in this field, developers and engineers must have the ability to adapt and learn new skills quickly. This includes staying up-to-date with new technologies and frameworks, as well as learning new programming languages, tools, and methodologies.

Being able to continuously learn and adapt is crucial for developers and engineers to be able to improve their skills and stay current with the latest industry trends. In addition to this, it also allows them to take on new and challenging projects, which can lead to personal and professional growth.

The ability to adapt and learn also allows developers and engineers to be more versatile, making them more valuable assets to their team and organization. It also allows them to be more adaptable to different types of projects and clients, and to be more efficient in their work. In addition, it allows them to be able to troubleshoot and debug problems effectively.

Adaptability and the willingness to learn are critical skills for a developer or engineer. They help to stay current in the ever-evolving tech industry, to improve their skills and to be more versatile, efficient and effective in their work.

5. Patience... 🫣

Patience is a critical skill for developers and engineers, as they often work on complex projects that require a great deal of attention to detail and problem-solving. The ability to take the time to thoroughly understand a problem and carefully consider different solutions is crucial for success in this field. Rushing through a project or task can lead to mistakes and ultimately cause delays in the long run. Additionally, Patience helps in debugging and problem-solving, and it's important to have a positive attitude and not get bogged down by mistakes or setbacks.

Effective communication (talked more about it in point 2 "Communication and Collaboration") is also an essential skill for developers and engineers. Tech people must be able to communicate their progress, updates, and any issues that arise in a clear and concise manner.

Conclusion

Overall, while the specific skills required for success as a developer or engineer may change over time, the ability to solve problems, communicate and collaborate effectively, and continuously learn and adapt remain essential.

Other important skills such as patience, the ability to communicate without using technical terms, staying up-to-date with new technologies and frameworks, and adaptability and willingness to learn.

To be a successful developer/engineer, one must possess a combination of technical and personal skills, and continuously work to improve and stay current in the ever-evolving tech industry.
