I had to re-login to my GitHub.com account today amid using it without requiring a login from my personal web browser for years. But, I cannot due to MFA requirements.
Yes, I've read the recovery process and, no, I don't want or need to add MFA to my account, which contains zero personal or financial information outside of an email address and name.
Microsoft believes GitHub is "essential" and that users will happily sign up for MFA. That is false. I will happily move over to one of GitHub's competitors and not think twice about it.
Now, Microsoft is locking down GitHub; for example, if you aren't logged in and run a search query, you can no longer see results from individual code contributions. The results will only include issues, packages, etc.
I encourage others to depart GitHub, as well. I haven't really used it that much over the last year -- ever since AI became a hot commodity in 2023 -- and, if you're in the job market, interviewers barely look at your repo, so don't worry about that.
If you want to show off a project, post it somewhere else; the platform doesn't matter insomuch as the content being put on display.
This is a GitHub problem, BTW. When I went to contact customer service without logging in, I had to:
- Solve a Captcha
- Validate my (already-validated) email address.
- Fill out the form.
- Solve ANOTHER Captcha before being able to submit the form.
That's correct. To send one customer service request, I had to endure three separate validation schemes.
If you like doing this, that's great; continue on as usual.
If you value your privacy and sanity, leave GitHub and any other non-essential service that feels like MFA is a mandatory thing.
