IST 402: Introduction

Introduction

Hi Everyone,

My name is Drew and I'm a senior at Penn State studying the Design & Development track of the Information Sciences and Technology major. Although I am also pursuing a minor in Security and Risk Analysis, my true interests lie in web development--which is why I'm writing this introduction!

Outside of the classroom, I work as a Learning Assistant within the College of IST and volunteer as an IST Diplomat, working as a student ambassador for the College. I really enjoy hanging out with my friends, keeping up with everything PSU sports, and being outside (pickup football, snowboarding, and spikeball are some favorites).

Web Dev?

This past summer, I had the opportunity to work as a full-stack software engineer for Alarm.com. I was interested in web development prior to the internship; but, if my time there taught me anything, it's that I really enjoy working on things that end users directly interact with. Thus, I'm taking this Web Components course to improve my web development skills as I look for full-time careers.

The environment and its current state have become a recent passion/concern of mine, so my goal upon graduation is to find a career where I can positively impact the environment's declining state. I took a few climate science classes last semester, and while I did not enjoy the nitty-gritty of climatology, I saw the opportunity to make a difference with something I do enjoy. Web development may not seem like the place to start fighting climate change, but I think accessibility to information is an integral part of encouraging some long-overdue improvement to society's environmental practices. Hearing Professor Ollendyke mention that we would be prioritizing accessibility for the work we do in this course really excited me, so I'm looking forward to learning more!
