Really just wanted to say hello.
I am new here, so please don't bite. Just new to the whole web-dev experience. Really enjoying this platform and felt like a good time as any to say hi and share a bit about myself with you guys.
I orignally began doing WordPress sites for a few folk, and was slowly getting going into it until the real world came knocking
That took 2 years of my life, I only mention that as I felt like when I left the web development scene, albeit I was only making WordPress sites using page builders and templates nothing fancy. Code at that time looked like a printer broke down whilst printing a page, the whole use of syntax and nonsensical jargon litterally felt a lemon was being grated into my neocortex.
Code, in all respects was like a mindnumbing anesthetist that spoke gobbelldygook. However, It was during those two years when I was doing other things, I really started to miss the whole thing of building on the web and getting paid for it. It was in my head, that it was alot easier than what I was doing at the time and I started to become receptive to the odd tid-bit of tech news that came my way from the social sphere.
I started to become interested.
I would get the odd news about some cool mobile feature or I'll be looking at a website and you think, man that is awesome, I wonder how they did that.
So things changed, alot. I really didnt like the sound of going back to doing a typical 9-5 sales job. Really learning to fly of tall buildings still sounds more appealing use of my time than going back to that life.
It was then I started thinking, what if I could switch careers, and if so what would I switch too. Given my reacquaintance to all things tech at the time, it was all too familiar to run back to my dusty PC that stood neglected like a relic that would occasionally grant access to surf the web and the unbearable privilege of doing not much else.
Thinking long and hard about what to do, I found myself gradually looking at things like 'how to build websites in 2019' thinking it was the same as it was in 2015-17 where it was php mad, you had your servers which done all the work and getting sites to be responsive and mobile-friendly was like the biggest business overhaul of the time.
So given this predated mindset that I had, you could imagine my utter dismay at the sheer scope of how things advanced in such a relatively short period of time. It honestly felt like I was away for dog-years, and came back as an old man with no clue.
Being told about how sites have went from server-side scripted to being statically generated using serverless tools to deliver scalable dynamic sites...I would of walked the other way and said, this c**t is talking pish. which is polite glasweigen for 'wtf is this utter nonsense'
Given the rise in complexity I thought if this is what I wish to pursue, I ought to do it right. Looking hard over the Job boards as to what is the in-demand skills everyone is going on about (React developers). Underlying all of this was 'Must have knowledge of HTML,CSS,JS and 1000+ years of experience'.
I was going to have to face my fear of code and everything to do with it and see if I can at least make an atempt at making a site without using WordPress and use this new JAMStack way that I have been so impressed by.
So I started looking around, at alot and I actually cant stress the quanity and quaility of information that there is about learning how to do this. All the learning resources you want and need, some locked away behind paywalls and alot of open source tutorials and projects to learn.
So learn I did, and my god its been....fun.π
So much fun, that I am all in at this point. Im hooked, lined and sinking....
But I am actually enjoying every minute of it.
Code doesnt seem so daunting and dare I say it, Ive gotten use to the lemon.
Thanks for reading, hope you keep safe =)
