A lot of times, a decent data scientist will outearn a good web developer, simply because data science jobs usually pay more. Plus, you don't take into consideration soft skills such as the art of negotiation, jumping on opportunities and having dumb luck.
By being a good developer you are in a better position to be paid higher - but in our field, where salaries are high anyway, is more money the end goal? Is it the epitome of our strive to be the better?
I think working on interesting projects, with good people and having pleasure doing what you do should be our goal, all while getting proper pay of course.
