There is no awaiting email activation since last 10 days and no spam registrations apart from legit steem account registrations are observed.
Most people can still use their GMAILs to register a steem account. The rule is that 1 email 1 IP per 24 hours.
As to the time writing this post, 142602 Account Tickets may be used to claim Accounts on the Steem Blockchain.
This could go for a while without being impacted by the spam activities that were occuring in the past. The IPs can be bought, and the emails could be faked or temp or just aliases. So, by only allowing the major email providers, this could filter out most of the spam activities.
