Hello I'm Dina 👋, a senior backend developer primarily working with Node.js. Today, I want to share my thoughts on Hacktoberfest and my recent experiences contributing to open source projects.
In our fast-paced lives, it can be challenging to find the time to give back to the open source community. While it's relatively easy to get started with open source contributions, making a meaningful impact often requires a substantial commitment of time and effort. Understanding the project and effectively communicating with maintainers are important components of successful open source contributions.
This year, my motivation for Hacktoberfest was to learn and contribute to a simple Swift/SwiftUI related project that I stumbled upon. While I'm excited about this endeavor, I also realize that it will take some time for me to complete my pull request and truly make a difference in the project.
In addition, I made contributions to two other projects during the time. First, I contributed to Verto.sh, which is an excellent resource for finding popular open source projects with beginner-friendly issues. It simplifies the process of discovering new projects and making your first contributions.
I also made a small contribution to Verdaccio, a lightweight Node.js private proxy registry. While it may not be a massive contribution, it's a part of my journey to give back to the open source community and contribute in ways that align with my skills and interests. It's the hours that dedicate to the tool/project of your choice that matters. It gives me a sense of fulfilment.
Hacktoberfest is a fantastic opportunity to engage with open source projects, learn new things, and connect with the global developer community. It's a reminder that every contribution, no matter how big or small, is valuable and appreciated by maintainers and fellow developers. As we wrap up this year's Hacktoberfest, I'm grateful for the chance to give back and look forward to more open source adventures in the future.
