Hi everyone, My name is Jack Wenyoung. I'm a Pythoner who develops backend, web scrapers, and serverless lambdas. Right now I'm studying Textual for building TUI, Wagtail for website building, and a few machine learning for working requirements.
I have been attracted by dev.io's UI and wonderful content which led me to decide to join.
Fun fact about me, I have five adorable cats and one dog.
Hello! Nice to have you here! ππ
Hello there! Much welcome to the DEV community!
Welcome Jack
Hello Jack! Welcome to Dev :)
TUIs rock! And so does Dev's UI π
The UI is pretty amazing!
Hi everyone!
My name is Igor, and I'm a software developer. I have been working as a developer since 2012, and I have commercial experience in html coding, frontend, backend, mobile development, different languages and frameworks. I wrote a few articles about algorithms, backend, fronted, and microservices.
And there is a fun fact about me - I joined dev.to in 2020 but received a βWriting Debutβ budget now.
Have a good day, best regards!
Hello! Nice to have you here! π
Welcome back, Igor! My name is Michael and I'm a Community Manager here at DEV.
Anyway, I hope the Writing Debut badge experience wasn't too confusing. π We just created but wanted to retroactively reward it to everybody that has written on DEV... but our delivery wasn't as smooth as we had hoped, haha.
Regardless, I'm really glad it brought ya back onto DEV. π
Hi Igor, welcome to the DEV community! Nice to have you π
Welcome to the party! π
Welcome new DEVs!
We welcome and encourage you to find a helpful post and leave a βthank youβ comment β€οΈ

Hello!
I am a veterinarian. My hobby is learning Rust. I would like to know what are the best place and tools for Rust developing.
Thank you,
I
Heyo!
Awesome to have a vet here. My wife is a veterinarian!
BTW, my name is Michael and I'm a Community Manager at DEV. If you have questions about using the platform, just hit me up!
To answer your question about where to go to learn Rust, for starters, I'd def recommend following the #rust tag!
#rust
Personally, I am not learning Rust nor am I developer, so can't say that I have the best suggestions, but I'm gonna throw a few posts your way anyway from some folks that I think would be helpful.
@link2twenty recently shared this beginner-friendly article:
Learning Rust: A clean start
Andrew Bone γ» Feb 26
Also, I've noticed @francescoxx writing lots of Rust content this year!
Francesco Ciulla
I'm sure there are others who I am leaving out here, but these are two that come to mind with more recent posts!
thank you

Heyo! It's good to have ya with us Utkarsh.
My name is Michael and I'm a Community Manager here at DEV. Sounds like you'll fit right in with the other folks here on DEV. π
Since you're learning AWS, I'd like to point ya to the organization, AWS Community Builders:
AWS Community Builders
It's probably the largest org on DEV and it's made up of folks who in the AWS community β i.e. it's primary community members and not as much AWS team members. Anyway, this group is regularly creating helpful tutorials and talking about their experiences using AWS.
There's also AWS Heroes which I believe is again community members, but this group is more vetted and includes highly experienced individuals.
AWS Heroes
Anyway, I realize you're hear for more than just AWS, but hope this info is helpful.
If you have any questions about using DEV, feel free to hit me up!
It's amazing to join this organization's and learn from the folks. I'll explore more. Thanks for Sharing @michaeltharrington !
Hello Utkarsh. Welcome to the awesome community. We are glad that you are hear to contribute to the community. And yes, you'll find great connections here.
For sure @subaash_b !!
I am a software developer since 2001, with experience in backend development mainly with C#, but I like all OOP languages. I love software architecture. Looking forward for some nice discussions
Great to have ya here with us, Paulo. Appreciate the classic hello world greeting. π
Anywho, my name is Michael and I'm a Community Manager here at DEV. Hope ya enjoy the site and if you have any questions, feedback, or other comments, feel free to hit me up!
Welcome to DEV!
Hi just staring my journey and changing career at 43. This is something Iβve been looking forward to and itβs becoming a hobby fast so I know Iβll be successful because only when you give up you loose. Thanks in advance for all the help and tutelage.
Welcome, Chris!
It's cool to hear about how ya arrived at DEV. There are lots of folks that land here when changing careers. We should probs consider dedicating a tag to it... gonna consider that. π€ But, just to say, you'll fit right in!
Anywho, my name is Michael and I'm a Community Manager at DEV. To be clear, I'm personally not a developer, but if you have any questions about using DEV or wanna talk about the software industry more generally, don't hesitate to hit me up!
Thanks so much Iβm also open to any suggestions to help me on the path to succeeding in this field any suggestions welcomed. Thanks again.
No probs at all! And right on, I'd be happy to give a few general pointers.
This is very dev.to-specific, but one series you might enjoy browsing through is Sloan's Inbox.
Sloan is our mascot here at DEV and each week we share a different questions that comes in from the community. Admittedly, if a question doesn't come in, we typically just make one up that we think would be helpful. π€«
In any case, there are plenty of questions that come in from beginners and the answer might be helpful to ya!
Also, on this note, if you have a question you wanna ask anonymously, you can send it in via the form here and we'll ask it on your behalf. This can be helpful for amplifying a question you have + if there's something you'd like to ask privately, it gives you the option to do so.
And, as for some more general advice, here are three things I've picked up from listening to others in our community:
1) Just know that it's normal to be overwhelmed. There's soooooo much to learn out there (more than is possible) and a lot of these concepts build on each other. I've heard folks regularly claim that early on they didn't realize how much they didn't know, then there's a point (often several points) where it's like they reach a peak (i.e. they finally get comfy with what they've been leanring), only to realize that there are way many more mountains to climb. Hope this makes sense! I don't mean to be discouraging, rather, I just want to point out that this is a common feeling.
2) If you're learning JS, invest time learning vanilla JS and don't just focus on frameworks. I think there are differences of opinion here, so don't take my word as absolute truth, but in general I often hear folks touting the benefits of learning vanilla JS before getting too attached to any frameworks. Frameworks are used in tandem with JS to make things easier and more efficient but they can also limit you and hold you back from learning about what's going on underneath. Don't get me wrong, I don't think you have to avoid them for forever, but it's good to be aware of the pros and cons.
3) Early on, you'll probably become a generalist, learning many different things across many expertise, but as you go on, you'll have the option to specialize... continually consider what it is you want to do and how to get there. I'm not saying that you have to have a fully concrete idea of what you're hoping to become and stick with it. Rather, I think you should try out many different things and learn a little bit about each... that way you get a taste of what's out there + a good sense of what the different roles focus on and how they work together. If you have in mind that you want to work with AI, but then as you get into it, you find it's not for you, you can change... you can change back too! Continually expanding your knowledge will open up new pathways and new realizations. I'd recommend looking up the concept of a T-shaped developer as this is what I hear many folks are striving to become.
Hope this info is helpful and best of luck to ya out there, Chris!
Michael, OHHH Thank You for this post! Reading through the newcomer posts it seems that nearly everyone has extensive experience in development. Your comments brought some relief, much appreciated!
No probs at all, Holly! Glad this message was encouraging. π
We def have plenty of beginners here, so despite the looks of commenters' skilled backgrounds, I assure you there are many here who are also just beginning. Anywho, we pride ourselves on being a diverse and inclusive community here, so I hope that the experienced folks in our community will be good guides and friendly stewards of the software development world for ya. After all, everybody had to start at some point right?
Well, that's all for now, but welcome to DEV and hope you get a lot out of the platform here! π

Hi everyone!! Nice to meet you!
I'm Ernesto from latam, I'm software developer and blockchain enthusiast. I started 9 years ago as SharePoint consultant but I've been working as Full Stack Dev since the last 4 years, mainly using React, Angular, JavaScript, C# and Python. Nowaday I'm looking for remote work or maybe to start freelancing so I hope to learn about these with some great articles I already read here...
Hello
I'm a former construction worker changing careers due to being too old and worn out to carry on with what I used to do physically. After a bit of noodling about figuring out what to do next I have reached the conclusion that development is the way forward for me because this allows me to continue to build things, just in a less strenuous way.
I'm currently learning vanilla js, node js, react, and mongodb, along with continuing to work with HTML, and css.
Nice to meet you all.
Welcome Mat! My name is Michael and I'm a Community Manager here. It's great to meet ya!
I totally hear ya on the transition and hope that it goes well for ya. It's kinda cool to move from constructing the physical (buildings I'm guessing) to constructing the abstract (code) haha. As you said "continue to build things, just in a less strenuous way."
It sounds like you're starting off on a good foot from what I hear. Admittedly, I am not a developer, so I'm not gonna claim that I know the "best" path, but many folks claim that it's good to get a basic understanding programming Vanilla JS before going to deep in frameworks β it apparently helps to have an underlying understanding.
Well, that's all I have to say for now.
It's nice to have ya with us and feel free to hit me up if you have questions, comments, or other feedback about DEV!
Hi π I wish you all the luck in building stuff in just a different way π
I'm a software developer with 20 years of experience in developing desktop and web applications starting with C++, C#, Objective-C, Swift, and finally Java, and looking forward to learning new technologies in architecture and system design

Hello all,
Just joined today, I'm John aka Later_developer - I'm currently working in a non-tech related profession but have always gravitated towards tech-related projects in work. Now being slightly fed up of the day job I'm considering a change of career so have embarked on a journey to learn the skills necessary to be a full stack developer one day (perhaps!)
Looking forward to lots of good interaction and knowledge sharing in the Dev community.
My name's Richard, I'm not good at talking about myself but I'll give it a try. I've had 5 different career paths and now I'd like to start a new one. I am looking towards Frontend Dev. I have a few physical problems so I need something that doesn't require a lot of physical effort (mental effort is not a problem). One problem is my hearing. Not good. My current occupation is teaching and being able to hear well is important. Anyway, I've been studying HTML, CSS, and JS. Right now I am looking for something along the lines of JS exercises to practice. Nice to be here.

hiEveryone,
I started IT back in 2002, basically HTML. In 2011 I did some hands-on in Networking, Structured cabling & Fibre optics, IP/PBX, Java. I really donβt have work experience as I ghosted on IT, my excuse was building a business (outside of IT). I current see myself as a beginner in IT. Last year I took up a 1yr self-paced Cyber Security course. I am yet to complete the modules and it expires 30/03/24, certification exams comes up just before it expires. I seek any sort of motivation or guide, and to learn from you all. Cheers!

I arrived at dev.to while searching for help on an AWS course and thought it was a great place so I registered.
I currently work in financial services with a fairly common Microsoft tech stack and using a lot of AWS cloud services, I seem to be moving towards the architectural side, hence the recent interest in studying for AWS exams. I'm still loving it and excited to chat about all things related, and to keep learning.
Best Wishes Everyone!

Hello, everyone I'm Terry Knowles, a playa on the Team,
I hope this message finds you well. My name is Terry Knowles, and I'm excited to be part of the team as we embark on this journey together.
A little about myself: I've recently made the decision to transition into programming, primarily due to the impact of COVID-19. Unfortunately, I experienced symptoms of the virus that led to neuropathy, causing swelling in my hands, feet, and legs. This health challenge prompted me to reevaluate my career path and explore opportunities that allow me to work from home while still pursuing my passion for technology.
I'm eager to contribute to our project and learn from each of you as we collaborate towards our common goal. Let's work together to create something great.
Best regards,
Terry Knowles
Hello there, I'm Shelly! I am a business consultant for accounting, finance, and tech projects, nice to meet all of you! Though I hold a masters in CS and love to code when I can, it has been a while since I have coded anything, besides random projects in VBA, SQL, and C#. I am currently working on a project in Odoo, anyone familiar with Odoo online? Specifically Odoo online and custom integrations? I just found out that the online version does not support 3rd parry apps and am a little bummed since I need to integrate our Shopify store with Odoo online and it seems like it might be a rough start for me since I am barely brushing up again., Any advice, tips, or help is super appreciated! :)
Whoops sorry it accidently posted twice!!!

I have been a systems technician for about 20 years and in the last 6 years been learning about bash scripting language on my own.

hihi
Long time Lurker. First time poster. Fell in love with this community after a few reads on some how-to-termux postings. I like to mod my android, custom recoveries, custom kernels, custom roms, those sort of things. I have hard/soft bricked my phones many times, bootloops are way more easier to deal with, but every time I get it back to stock. Having banged my head against the wall enough times that doesn't happen anymore. I like old xiaomi, one plus, and motorola. I have done a rootfull untethered unc0ver jb for an a12 14.4.1 ios. I am a forever distro hopper. I haven't found my one true love yet. Maybe one day a riced out Arch? I dunno. My main work space is a M1 mac, but I do have amd and intel laptops that I experiment with and try different things out on. Don't know what else to say but thanks for the reading.
Hello all!
I've learned of Dev.to from Hacktoberfest 2023 reward kit (ποΈ), but came here just a few days ago. I've got a couple of ideas that might be useful for software developers, and get more useful when they're shared: betting on bugs in a project, and EigenFlow system for social networks to go with EigenKarma!
I've just found out there is no description for EigenKarma on Dev.to yet; so there's a short one in order.
That's a system maintaining karma values, where user doesn't see sitewide karma value for others, but rather his own. Likes (or whatever the service decides to call them) are transitive with a certain coefficient, so that forms a trust graph, which can be used for evaluating content, or distributing quality-requiring work.
