Every Tuesday we round up the previous week's top posts based on traffic, engagement, and a hint of editorial curation. The typical week starts on ...

How can we get our posts onto the top 7 ๐Ÿซค

Heyo Mursal! That's a great question.

To be honest, there's no sure-fire way to get your post featured in the top 7, but if you continue writing every week and try your best to share high quality, vendor neutral (generally at least), interesting posts while also being kind and helpful to folks in the comments of your post, your chances definitely increase!

Aw thought my top post would make it.

I would have loved to get more people on the discussion especially since it has more comments than the most liked post ever.

Yeah, also thought reactions, comments and views would rank higher, and these lists would match the Weekly top more.

But great job getting to the top with your article ๐Ÿ’ช

Missed opportunity ๐Ÿ˜”. They pretend that the battle of .env didnโ€™t happen.

It seems like the posts are chosen really arbitrarily as opposed to the explanation given in the introduction ๐Ÿคจ

"a hint of editorial curation" is applied, which seems reasonable to me.

I personally would prefer it were more data based. Seems weird to me to have one person pick what they prefer.

Thatโ€™s why there is the โ€˜Topโ€™ tab and you can sort by your preference. This is a compilation that attempts to avoid all the data based top articles being biased towards a singular subject matter (JavaScript) and more rounded across different topics.

While I appreciate the feedback, if we just chose these articles based on data alone that might encourage people to write a) listicles b) on topics that are highly followed or broad in appeal and c) controversial/inflammatory posts. It would also potentially favor the same people again and again.

We (the DEV Team, not just me) try to pick articles that we believe have a positive impact on the community, first and foremost. We also try to pick a diverse selection of articles and authors. The choices are not arbitrary at all, there is a fair amount of work that goes into this selection; much more work than if we just ran a query and pulled the articles with the most views, reactions, or comments.

That said, if you are interested in seeing the "top" articles by metrics, you have the ability to filter your feed as @j3ffjessie outlined above.

@michaeltharrington Thank you for the reply and the clarification.

I think the reasons you list makes perfect sense and I can see why you choose to do it this way then.

Personally I donโ€™t think the title nor the description communicates this very well. But thatโ€™s just my take.

Again, thank you for the reply.

That's what's up, Kasper! We will certainly consider your feedback.

While this post is currently published by me, it's something we've been sharing for quite a while under this title and typically without too much push back on our choices, process, or title. However, we're definitely not averse to change and I can understand your take. I will bring it up for discussion with the team.

Thanks for sharing your honest opinion here!

Another crazy with the .env situation is that the creators of dotenv had to step in, CEO's stepped in, but DEV hasen't said anything. @wadecodez
