Microsoft Azure Trial Hackathon Winners, Announced!

In February, we announced a new challenge on DEV, in partnership with our friends at Microsoft: the Microsoft Azure Trial Hackathon.

Our brilliant participants were challenged to build brand new apps using Microsoft's free trial of their Azure cloud platform. Submissions were to be filed in one of five categories: AI Aces, Computing Captains, Low-Code Legends, Java Jackpot, and Wacky Wildcards.

It's never easy for contest judges to pick just one Grand Prize winner per category and 10 runners-up and this time was no different. Even so, judges from the DEV and Microsoft Azure teams managed to pick our winners and I'm excited to share them with you today!

Let's take a look at the winning projects for the Microsoft Azure Trial on DEV!

AI Aces: @fp

Computing Captains: @alicefolvaiter

Low-Code Legends: @sandy_codes_py

Java Jackpot: @dev117uday

Wacky Wildcards: @iron_samurai

All Grand Prize Winners will receive:

  • $1,500 USD gift card or equivalent 🤑
  • $300 USD credit to the DEV Shop 😎
  • Microsoft Azure Sticker Pack 🎁
  • DEV Sticker Pack ✨
  • DEV “Azure Trial Hack” Grand Prize profile badge 🏆

And, our 10 Runners-Up, in random order!

All runners-up will receive:

  • $250 USD gift card or equivalent 💰
  • $150 USD credit to the DEV Shop 🌈
  • Microsoft Sticker Pack ⭐️
  • DEV Sticker Pack 💻
  • DEV “Azure Trial Hack” Runner-Up profile badge 🌟

Participants

All participants with a valid project will receive a DEV Sticker Pack and an “Azure Trial Hack” participant profile badge. 🎉

To everyone who submitted a project for this hackathon, we're giving you a huge round of applause. In the process of building your project, you sharpened your skills while learning something new. That's something to be very proud of.

Our team will follow up with all winners and participants about their prizes, gift codes, and stickers on Friday, March 25.

Great work, everyone! We hope you had a blast participating in the Microsoft Azure Trial Hackathon on DEV!

I know dude! No offence, even beginner apps and React API wrappers are getting mentions in the hackathon, while some submissions took months to make, and still didn't get a mention.

Your app was awesome, and your use of Azure services was straight to the point, and I'm surprised it didn't make it. Though I'm sure the judges will put the reason forth...

I don't believe it... really... I don't believe it!
Don't get me wrong... I didn't want to be awarded as a winner... but not event a mention???
Now I am waiting for a proper reason :)

Why the mention of my app here?👀

No offence here Samyuktha, I think your project is cool and really creative, I'm just trying to highlight the diversity of the submissions. I'm saying that many apps differ hugely on the timescale ideas, the presentation and everything, and though the only requirement of the hackathon was to use Azure services, most projects fulfilled the requirement.

I'm happy for the winners and was just curious to know why the project didn't make it 😃

@graciegregory
Can we say that's not acceptable at all ?!
Compared with other winning projects and runners up it's not fair at all, I don't want to sound rude and I'm sorry if someone of the partecipants will get mad with this but the level of some listed projects is really low compared to our one...

With more than 110 reactions we expect at least to get a reason why we're not even in the runners up while there are projects that are really "similar" to our one... (I say similar just for not saying anything else...)
Our project was one of the first to be posted after two weeks from the start of the hackathon, and the one I'm talking about was posted around the deadline date...We thought that with 10 days of judging you would have taken also these aspects into consideration...

Even the level of presentation of the project and of details in the blog post is not comparable, come on...

We are very disappointed.

You should give webcam permissions to the browser for let it work.
I’ve never said we should be the winners and obviously we didn’t pretend to be as Kasuken said, I’m just comparing our project with the other ones as I would judge if I would have been in the judging side.
I congratulate with the winners but I was expecting much more attention in the judging for an important hackathon, nothing else.

Are you serious?! 😂😂
You should check the source code of Moodflix and compare it with Fakeflix before throwing stupid sentences! So in your mind we are so stupid that we also called it with a similar name if we want to “hide” this thing? We also mentioned it in the blog post!!
Can’t believe it 😂😂

Congrats! 🎉 I was 90% sure you'd win in the category after reading your article, and your low-code app was so professional!

How does it feel like to win? Just curious 😃

Hey Mohit, thanks, means a lot to me.
To be honest, I've won multiple hackathons in the past, so nothing new.
The first time when you win would be the time when you're butterflies would come out.
Once it becomes usual then.. Nope!
I just try to give my best! Not a perfectionist,, might be (:

Hi all, I want to add my two cents to the discussion about the selected winners and Runners-Up.
I think it would help to avoid these discussions if more information about the criteria of the judges is posted in advance.
Will the rate the idea, the business value of the idea or the craftmanship of the code/architecture or for example in this hackathon the use of as many Azure functions as possible? Or how much does the documentation in the readme or in the video count.
Having this information beforehand may prevent discussions afterwards.
