Your code to the future civilization - GitHub Archival Program

Hey all!
Hope you're aware of Github storing the code all of the public repositories at Arctic. If not, this post is for you.

Introducing Github Archive Program

This is an initiative by Github to preserve the open source softwares for future generations. So they have shipped all of the public repository code to the Github Arctic Code Vault. The purpose of this program is to preserve open source software for the future generations by storing our code in an archive that is build to last a thousand years.

Will your code be sent too?

Did you have public Github repositories before February 2, 2020 ? Then chances are, Yes!, you're code is also at the Vault now. Safe and Sound. Snapshots were taken on February 2, 2020 and the code was successfully deposited in the Arctic Code Vault on July 8, 2020.

How much of Data was sent?

Around 21TB of repository data was written to around 186 reels of digital photosensitive archival film, by Github's archival partner Piql. It was sent to Svalbard which is around 1000kms north of the European mainland.

What will they do with the code?

The code will be preserved for more than 1000 years, and the future generations will be able to access the code. It feels great to know that, the civilization living after 1000 years might look back at us even if there occurs huge disasters.

Have you received the badge yet?

The official video:

It feels great to know that the code which we wrote will be preserved safely at the Arctic. So, when the future civilizations open the code and go through them, they would definitely pronounce my name wrongly ( haha! ). Jokes apart, thank you GitHub.

You have just shown how Open-source Open-source is.

Hey!

Has your repository gone to the Arctic? Share the profile/screenshot with us below. It is definitely something to be happy about. How do you feel? Tell us in the comments :)
