I freelance remotely and have a remote job, here is what I think

  • communication is a huge deal, you need to over-communicate to equate typical on-site communication
  • self-managing is a big deal, nobody is there to monitor you so you need to build the habit to do it yourself
  • problem solving becomes 3x more important as you don't have the other guys in the office to tap on the shoulder for help
  • time management is important as you can spend more time than you should since it's no hard start and stop time

I think a decent step into remote working is working on a distributed team where some of your team may not be in the same office. The next logical step is full remote.
