CS Dissertation - Designing for Users with Autism - Looking for feedback on my proposed guidelines

Hi Everyone,

I am currently in the middle of my dissertation of my Computer Science degree, and am looking for the help of the community! My project is focusing on accessibility and usability issues for users with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and the lack of guidance for developers to address these issues.

I have proposed a set of design guidelines for UX/UI designers and web/software developers which aim to improve the accessibility and usability of websites and applications for users with ASD by considering these guidelines during the design phase of the software development lifecycle.

To try and make this successful, I need the opinions of IT professionals (this community!) to find out how likely my proposed guidelines are to be adopted in the field or any changes that might make the guidelines more usable and adoptable.

I am extremely appreciative of anyone who has a spare 10 minutes to complete the short questionnaire. It can be found at the link below.

Hopefully it will lead to an improvement in web experience of users with ASD in the future!

Thanks for your time,

Dan

Very interesting dissertation topic! Commenting for further reach. Disability is definitely not talked about comfortably in tech so this is great work πŸ™ŒπŸΌ By the way, does your survey require developers with ASD?

Hi Maureen, thanks for your interest πŸ™‚. It would definitely be intriguing to get feedback from developers with ASD, but the survey is just for any developers in general who would be interested in the topic.

Is it alright if I share this survey to my LinkedIn for my network? I’m at linkedin.com/in/maureento if that’s alright.

Lasting thoughts: I just completed the survey and deeply believe this project is so necessary in tech! I’m a kinesiology student and the ignorance of accessibility in society is definitely alive and well. Inaccessibility is legitimately everywhere and even current guidelines can be so hefty to read. Again, thank you for taking up this project and am looking forward to the website β˜ΊοΈπŸ™πŸΌ

Yeah sure that would be great! And thank you for completing it too πŸ™‚.

It’s good to hear you think it is a worthwhile project! I am just starting my first developer role in the UK but from my research so far I totally agree, it appears accessibility is overlooked by developers. It will be interesting to see if I experience this going into my new role.

I’m going to be sending out the follow up survey with the website soon I’m just finishing it off πŸ™‚.

Thank you so much, and no problem at all! ☺️ I haven't had the privilege yet of working in companies but this is definitely something I'd like to observe in the workplace. Would love to follow up with this when the website launches ☺️

Wow, this is a very interesting dissertation topic. After all, it can not only improve you as a specialist, but also has social value. I'm just getting ready to write my work. And in fact, I'm very worried, I even found such a service for myself uk.edubirdie.com/write-my-disserta... to be able to get help in case I'm not sure about writing some chapter. What support services and resources did you use? Many thanks!
